The history of Alpharetta, GA goes back to the early 1800s. The city was conceived along an Indian Trail between the North Georgia Mountains to the Chattahoochee River. The village served as a trading post with tents, a log school, and some arbors. Indians from all over the region met here to exchange goods. All of the surrounding land was excellent for farming. The first name the town was given was called "New Prospect Campground". In 1857, when it became recognized by the State of Georgia it was renamed Alpharetta. The Greek words "alpha" meaning first, and "retta" meaning town. So this "First Town" became a part of the newly formed Milton County. Then in 1932, Milton County was merged into Fulton County.
Remarkably, the Civil War left Alpharetta untouched. During the early 1900s Alpharetta enjoyed a steady growth rate, mostly as a farming town. The continued northward expansion of Atlanta during the 1970s, doubled the population of Alpharetta. During the 1980s the economic boom brought more housing and businesses to the city. Alpharetta's rise has consistently contributed to the Atlanta Real Estate market's continual growth. During the 1990s the Alpharetta's population doubled again, this time to over 29,000 residents. With a thriving Real Estate Market, the City of Alpharetta is now one of the most sought after places to live in the southeast.
